Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe had two touchdown passes and two touchdown runs against Georgia in a crazy battle won by the Crimson Tide. It was the sixth time in his career that he had at least two of each variety of scores. The last Alabama quarterback to have multiple games with at least two touchdown passes and two touchdown runs was Jalen Hurts. He wore number two for the Crimson Tide from 2016 to 2018.
Speaking of Hurts and the number two…
Hurts So Good peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in August of 1982 and was sung by John Cougar (not Mellencamp yet).
Speaking of Cougars…
There is a problem in Houston. The Houston Cougars fell to 1-4 on the season and were shut out for the second straight week. First it was against Cincinnati and then last week it was to Iowa State. It was the first time that Houston was shut out two weeks in a row since 1994.
There is no problem is Provo. Those Cougars defeated Baylor last week and improved to 5-0 on the season for the eighth time in school history and the third time under Kalani Sitake. The first touchdown last week was a touchdown reception to running back Miles Davis. It was Davis’ first touchdown of any since 2020.
Speaking of Miles Davis…Â
The more well-known Miles Davis is the cool trumpet player that delighted audiences for over six decades. In 2006, he was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sadly, last Sunday was the 33rd anniversary of his death. He passed away in 1991 in Santa Monica, California.
Speaking of the Santa Monica, California…
USC’s quarterback Miller Moss was born in Santa Monica. He had three touchdown passes and a touchdown rush in last week’s comeback win against Wisconsin. The Badgers allowed Jalen Milroe to do the same feat in their prior game two weeks earlier (before that Wisconsin did not allow a quarterback to have three or more touchdown passes and one or more touchdown runs in the same game in the previous 116 games). USC’s current offensive coordinator is Josh Henson. Henson has had many coaching jobs around the college circuit including one as the tight ends coach at LSU in 2007 when they won the National Championship.
Speaking of LSU and 2007…
This one is a stretch, but this past week Kentucky defeated Ole Miss. The Rebels came in ranked sixth in the nation. This was the first time that Kentucky has defeated a top six team since defeating LSU in 2007 in three overtimes. In the game last Saturday, the winning score came on a fumble recovery in the endzone by tight end Josh Kattus. Kattus was the man on the spot when quarterback Gavin Wimsatt fumbled the ball inside around the two-yard line. Wimsatt has 24 rush attempts this season compared to just ten pass attempts. He and Kentucky’s other quarterback Brock Vandagriff have only four touchdown passes combined.
Speaking of four touchdown passes…
Kentucky ranks tied for 109th in the FBS with those four touchdown passes. Another team with four is Army. Army is also ranked tied for fifth in the FBS with 16 touchdown rushes. Also, tied for fifth is Navy. Army and Navy have both started the 2024 season with a record of 4-0. The last time both Army and Navy started the season 4-0 was in 1945. That season, Army won the National Championship and Navy finished second in the polls.
Speaking of 1945 rankings…
After Army and Navy, the team that finished third that season in the AP poll was you guessed it, Alabama.
